The latest formal release of HDF5, version 1.8.1, can be obtained from this page.
Due to the number of major new features in 1.8, we are supporting two branches of HDF5. The 1.6 branch is for those 1.6 users who do not need the new features in 1.8 or are not ready to move to a major new release. We provide the HDF5 1.6.7 release for those users.
New users are strongly encouraged to use HDF5 1.8.
External Software
The following libraries are used by HDF5, but are *not* part of HDF5.
PLEASE be aware that the external software below (especially ZLIB)
is provided for convenience reasons ONLY and comes WITHOUT
a guarantee. We encourage users to use the ZLIB library that is
installed on their systems.
External Libraries used by HDF5
| SZIP Compression | Information | Source Code [ 2.1 ]* | Pre-Compiled Binaries [ 2.0 ] [ 2.1 (Windows only) ]** |
| ZLIB Compression | Information | Source Code [ 1.2 ] | Pre-Compiled Binaries [ 1.2 ] |
*The SZIP configuration changed in version 2.1, but this did not affect the built binaries.
** The SZIP Encoder is ENABLED in the HDF5 binaries included below. This version allows a user to create, write, and read HDF5 datasets with SZIP compression. Please review the SZIP licensing information.
HDF5 Software
PLEASE note that there are two sets of 1.8.1 binaries included with many of the platforms listed below. One set is the binary built with the new 1.8.1 APIs, and the other set is built with the 1.6 API mappings.
We are providing the binaries built with the 1.6 API mappings for existing users who would like to benefit from many of the new features in HDF5 1.8.1, without having to change the API calls in their code.
THG generally encourages users to update applications to work with the latest HDF5 library and APIs, but also recognizes that in some circumstances, updating applications may not be feasible or necessary.
For information on these mappings, please see the document on the API Compatibility Macros in HDF5.
